HOUSING PROJECT

HOME — A place where a new future begins

Having a safe home and a stable source of income is essential for every family. We support families in Albania by improving their living conditions and strengthening their ability to provide for themselves. Over the years, we have built new houses for families in urgent need, repaired damaged homes, and made essential improvements to create safer, warmer, and more dignified living spaces.

In addition to housing support, we help families develop sustainable livelihoods by building greenhouses and providing goats, enabling them to grow food, generate income, and build long-term stability for their families. Our goal is not only to offer immediate relief but also to create lasting opportunities for families to thrive on their own.

A Home That Restored Their Dignity

For years, life was heavy for Nazif and Burbuqe Koçiu. Illness and poverty slowly took away their strength, their comfort, and their smiles. Nazif’s long sickness left him unable to work, while Burbuqe carried her pain quietly, her eyes often filled with tears.

Their home could barely protect them. Broken walls covered with plastic and a leaking roof made cold and fear part of everyday life. Feeling judged and invisible, Nazif withdrew from others, choosing silence over humiliation.

But their story did not end there.

Today, they live in a warm and safe home. But the greatest change is not the house, it is how they feel. Fear has been replaced by peace, and dignity has returned. Nazif now steps outside with confidence, and Burbuqe has found her smile again.

Their journey reminds us that a safe home offers more than walls and a roof, it can restore dignity, belonging, and the simple joy of living with hope.

A Safe Home, A New Beginning

For Refik Sharka and his family, home was once a place of constant danger. After a fire severely damaged their house, its burned walls, broken windows, and collapsing roof made everyday life unsafe. Refik and his wife, Rolanda, both living with mental illness, faced many challenges as they tried to protect and raise their children in these conditions. Despite everything, the family showed resilience. With goats provided by NDI, they worked to meet their basic needs and keep their household going. Their youngest child, living with serious difficulties affecting his mind, eyesight, and hand, required extra care, making daily life even more demanding. A turning point came when NDI built a new home for the family. Today, the Sharka family lives in a secure and stable house. The children now have a safe environment to grow, and the youngest has started attending school what once seemed impossible. The new home has brought more than physical shelter; it has created a foundation for safety, dignity, and a hopeful future. This transformation shows how the right support can turn a life of constant risk into one of protection, dignity, and new possibilities.

A Home Restored, A Family Renewed

Ali Xhebexhiu is the proud father of six children, some of whom face mental health challenges. His wife, living with a disability that affects her legs, relies on crutches or a wheelchair to move around. For years, the family’s home could not meet their basic needs, it was unsafe, uncomfortable, and limiting for everyone.

Thanks to NDI, the family now lives in a fully restored home. The roof, walls, windows, and doors have been completely renovated. A new toilet with running water, a modern kitchen, and a safe, comfortable living space have transformed daily life for the family.

This new home is more than bricks and plaster — it is dignity, safety, and hope. For Ali, his wife, and their children, life has been renewed, allowing them to live with comfort, pride, and the support they deserve.
